ATTENTION POETS AND SHORT STORY WRITERS: Please note the reading periods for our new poetry contest: The James Applewhite Poetry Prize Competition, and for the North Carolina Writers’ Network Doris Betts Fiction Prize Competition. We are now only considering poetry and fiction submissions for these contests during their respective reading periods.

Online Submissions

The North Carolina Literary Review is no longer accepting submissions via US mail. Please do not email submissions to the Editor or the Submissions Manager. Rather, we ask that you submit online following the instructions and links here.

The North Carolina Literary Review (NCLR) is using this "Open Journal System" to handle submissions online. The "submit online" button below will begin with registration for first-time users or login for subsequent submissions. Within the registration form, check the "AUTHOR" box, which will allow you access to submissions.

Guidelines and NCLR Author Style Sheet

Before submitting, consult the Guidelines and NCLR Author Style Sheet for formatting your manuscript.

After submitting, add NCLRSubmissions@ecu.edu to your Address Book to make sure you receive acknowledgements and replies.

Registration and/or login are required to submit online.

  • In order to use the submissions tools, be sure to check the "Author" box at the bottom of the registration form. If you have trouble scrolling to the end of the registration form, use your browser’s outer frame scroll bar in addition to the scroll bar embedded around the Open Journal System.
  • Once you are a user, log in and click on the "Author" link to create a new submission or to see the status of your recent submissions.
  • If "Author" does not appear among your options after logging in, click on "Edit my profile" and then check the "Author" box.
